Cognitive Self Change or Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Here at P.A.T.S our cognitive self change program allows individuals to look at their actions and begin to take responsibility for the choices they make. Through group discussion and education we try to help you acquire new skills to cope with life's problems. It is very common for individuals struggling with substance use to experience destructive and negative thinking or thought patterns. Not recognizing these thought patterns as unhealthy, they seek treatment for depression or other external influences. Since our cognition affects our well being, changing harmful thought patterns is essential. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy addresses harmful thought patterns, which help clients recognize their ability to practice alternative ways of thinking, and regulates distressing emotions and harmful behavior.

  Goals of COG

Cog is an effective treatment for substance abuse, anger management, and specific mental health diagnoses. An active therapeutic modality, CBT is present-oriented, problem-focused, and goal-directed, which may provide the following benefits:

  • COG explores the client’s patterns of behavior leading to self-destructive actions and beliefs that direct these thoughts
  • COG allows clients and therapists to work together in a therapeutic relationship to identify harmful thought patterns and actively seek alternative thinking
  • Cog skills are useful, practical and helpful strategies that can be incorporated into the client’s everyday life
